DANCING IN THE STREET PETER KNAPP AND FASHION 1960-1970

by François CHEVAL et Audrey HOAREAU (The Red Eye - Commissaires de l’exposition)

From March 9th through June 10th, 2018, the Cité de la Mode et du Design dedicates an exhibit to photographer Peter Knapp. “Dancing in the Street” shows and tells us about fashion in the 1960s and ‘70s. Through more than a hundred images, most of which have never been on public display, the visitor sets out to discover the graphical and aesthetic universe of an artist who was a witness to, and an accomplice of, women’s liberation. In his view, he wants them to be, and sees them as, bold, quirky, and free of any constraints. Wearing Courrèges, Cardin, Ungaro, or Mugler, they are presented and placed within the pages of fashion magazines. Particularly in the pages of Elle, of which Peter Knapp was artistic director. Throughout this Spring, the Cité invites visitors to enjoy a creative, narrative journey through his work, in a setting created by interior designer Vasken Yéghiayan. A selection of his work is also being displayed, in March and April only, on the esplanade of the Gare de Lyon, free for anyone to peruse.
